Athlete’s foot

Athlete's foot is an infection on the feet caused by fungus that thrives in an environment of warmth and dampness. It is commonly seen after people have been on antibiotics or radiation, as these treatments destroy the beneficial bacteria and cause an imbalance in the bacterial flora within the body as well as externally.

You are at risk for getting athlete's foot if you: wear closed shoes, that are plastic-lined, keep your feet wet for prolonged periods, sweat excessively or develop a minor skin or nail injury.

Symptoms include: cracked, flaking and peeling skin between the toes, redness and itchiness, a burning or stinging sensation and there may be blisters, oozing or crusting.

To prevent athlete's foot it is important to dry your feet properly after bathing or swimming, wear sandals or flip-flops in public pools and showers, change your socks often and wear shoes that are well ventilated.
