How to use a Neti Tea pot
Neti pots
originate from India and are used to clear the nasal passages and sinuses. The practice of nasal cleansing - known as Neti - has been used by practitioners of Ayurveda and Yoga in India for thousands of years and to the present day. Also called ‘nasal irrigation’ this practise has become very popular in the West now. Firmly associated with the practises of Yoga and Ayurveda, the
Neti pot
now has fans across the globe who swear by its benefits.
With increasing pollution and chemicals in our environment, there is huge rise in the number of people who suffer various forms of nasal congestion and respiratory illnesses. People practice Neti on a daily basis to help keep their sinuses clean and to make their breathing easier. Once they try it, most people find Neti to be a soothing and pleasant experience.
A neti pot, is used to pour warm, slightly salty water into one nostril with the head tipped forward and to one side. The water drains out of the other nostril along with mucus and dust that block the nasal passages. This process is also known as “nasal irrigation”, or jala neti.
Scientific studies have shown nasal irrigation to be a safe and effective treatment for people with a history of sinusitis. Neti pot enthusiasts often report dramatic improvements in chronic mucus and catarrh problems, reduced anxiety and an improvement in sleep problems.
Your neti pot should be delivered with detailed instructions for use; it is important to follow these directions and heed any warnings concerning the use of neti pots. A couple of important points to remember when beginning to use a neti pot are:
Thoroughly clean your Neti Pot after each use. Periodically place it in your dishwasher for a thorough sanitizing. Same as a toothbrush, do not share your neti pot with anyone else. Everyone in the household should have their own neti pot.
Try using only half the amount of recommended salt the first few times you use your neti pot until you become more accustomed to the process.
If you experience any discomfort please discontinue using your neti pot and consult your doctor or other health care provider.
