Chicken pox is a highly contagious disease caused by the virus Herpes zoster. It has a characteristic rash which can be present on the outside (skin) and the inside (mucous membranes) and may leave scars. The rash blisters and can be intolerably itchy. It is contagious until all blisters have dried up. The virus can be transmitted though direct contact with an infected person and may also be airborne. Commonly chicken pox is a childhood illness lasting for about 2 weeks. Adults who contract the disease generally have more severe symptoms.
