Thrush is caused by Candida Albicans, a single-celled fungus, which is always
present in the genital and intestinal tracts. If it is present in
disproportionate quantities however, it can cause infection.
Some women find that they suffer more yeast infections when using oral
contraceptives or during pregnancy. This may be due to an increased amount of
sugar in the vagina induced by changing hormone levels.
