How to use a Neti Tea Pot
Neti pots originate from India and are used to clear the nasal passages and sinuses. The practice of nasal cleansing - known as Neti - has been used by practitioners of Ayurveda and Yoga in India for thousands of years and to the present day. Also called ‘nasal irrigation’ this practise has become very popular in the West now. Firmly associated with the practises of Yoga and Ayurveda, the Neti pot now has fans across the globe who swear by its benefits.

With increasing pollution and chemicals in our environment, there is huge rise in the number of people who suffer various forms of nasal congestion and respiratory illnesses. People practice Neti on a daily basis to help keep their sinuses clean and to make their breathing easier. Once they try it, most people find Neti to be a soothing and pleasant experience.

A neti pot, is used to pour warm, slightly salty water into one nostril with the head tipped forward and to one side. The water drains out of the other nostril along with mucus and dust that block the nasal passages. This process is also known as “nasal irrigation”, or jala neti.

Scientific studies have shown nasal irrigation to be a safe and effective treatment for people with a history of sinusitis. Neti pot enthusiasts often report dramatic improvements in chronic mucus and catarrh problems, reduced anxiety and an improvement in sleep problems.

Your neti pot should be delivered with detailed instructions for use; it is important to follow these directions and heed any warnings concerning the use of neti pots. A couple of important points to remember when beginning to use a neti pot are:

Thoroughly clean your Neti Pot after each use. Periodically place it in your dishwasher for a thorough sanitizing. Same as a toothbrush, do not share your neti pot with anyone else. Everyone in the household should have their own neti pot.

Try using only half the amount of recommended salt the first few times you use your neti pot until you become more accustomed to the process.

If you experience any discomfort please discontinue using your neti pot and consult your doctor or other health care provider.

If the nasal secretion (mucus) is too thick, sticky or watery it will prevent the mucous membrane from transporting invading bacteria and viruses effectively, thus allowing them to cause infections.

  • Stimulates and strengthens the mucous membranes

How to use

  • Wash the Neti pot thoroughly
  • Pour warm pre-boiled water at body temperature and add one teaspoon of salt per 500 ml of water. We recommend using sea salt. Iodine salt is not suitable for usage with Neti pot.
  • Stir until the salt is dissolved. The solution should remind one of the taste of tears. If you feel burning or otherwise uncomfortable sensations during nasal cleansing, readjust the salt concentration and temperature of the water.
  • Stand at the sink or bathtub, place your feet directly under each shoulder, keep spine and head straight. Carefully put the tip of the nozzle in the right nostril, slant your head to the right side right so that your chin aligns with your shoulder, and start to pour the solution slowly, while keeping your mouth open.
  • Breathe slowly through your mouth. Try not to yawn, talk or laugh during the procedure. The water must pour out through the left nostril. If the solution gets in your mouth, do not swallow it but readjust the position of your head so that the water gets in your left nostril.
  • After ending the procedure with one nostril, blow your nose by doing 20-30 sharp breaths turning your head in various positions.
  • Repeat steps 3-4 with your left nostril.

Wash the Neti pot with warm water. We suggest cleansing your nose using Neti pot every day. Remember, Neti pot is a personal hygiene item that shouldn’t be shared.
